Good evening, this is Sengyo-kun. On the night of Friday, October 9th, it is important to look at Canadian employment and US consumer sentiment by separating them in the order they are released. Do not assume that the direction moved by the first indicator will continue as a trend until the weekend. Tonight, I want to make this single point the axis of my judgment.

The target period is from 18:00 on October 9, 2026, until the early morning of Saturday, October 10. All times are in Japan Standard Time. Since tonight’s major indicators have not been released at the time of writing, I will not preempt the results or market forecasts. I will organize the confirmed release schedules, past final figures, and conditional outlooks based on them separately.

Evening confirmation items and tonight’s perspective

For the preliminary US consumer sentiment report for October scheduled for 23:00 tonight, the final composite index for September, which serves as the starting point for comparison, was 48.1. The 1-year expected inflation rate is 4.6%, and the long-term expected inflation rate is 3.4%. These are neither tonight’s results nor forecasts. They are previous values used to read household economic sentiment and inflation expectations separately.

Since I cannot reliably confirm the evening exchange rates, I will not set current values or today’s highs and lows here. I will also avoid using the previous day’s prices that appeared in the morning article as trading levels for tonight. Please check the display time on your trading screen and keep the movements from 18:00 onwards and the positions just before each indicator as your own benchmarks.

This outlook does not determine the direction of the dollar-yen based solely on consumer sentiment figures. The idea is to separate currencies moved by Canadian factors from those moved by US factors, and to check whether the initial explanation still holds after the second announcement.

Confirmed schedule from tonight to tomorrow morning

    October 9, 21:30 – Canada’s September Employment Statistics

Canada’s labor force survey for September is scheduled to be released. 8:30 local Eastern Time has been converted to 21:30 Japan Time. First, check the change in the number of employed persons and the unemployment rate, then look at the breakdown such as full-time and part-time employment, and the labor participation rate.

Even if employment increases, the strength of the labor market cannot be determined by a single number alone. The interpretation changes depending on whether the change in the unemployment rate is linked to an increase or decrease in employment or an increase or decrease in the number of people looking for work. If you note down the forecasts from an economic calendar before the announcement, be careful not to confuse the previous value and forecast columns.

October 9, 23:00 – US October Preliminary Consumer Sentiment

The announcement is at 10:00 local Eastern Time, which is 23:00 Japan Time. In addition to the composite index, check how the expected inflation rate has changed from the previous report. Even if sentiment improves, if concerns about prices intensify, the evaluation of monetary policy may not simply align in one direction.

Here, it is useful to write down the ‘evaluation of the economy’ and the ‘evaluation of prices’ separately, line by line. Then, cross-reference the reactions of US interest rates and the dollar-yen. The point is not to jump to conclusions based solely on price movements as to whether the buying is driven by a positive reaction to economic improvement or by an awareness of the prolonged high-interest-rate environment.

October 10, 5:15 – US Bank Assets and Liabilities Statistics

There is also a scheduled release of weekly statistics summarizing the assets and liabilities of US banks. 16:15 local time on October 9 is 5:15 on October 10 in Japan. This is not a policy interest rate announcement. While the focus tonight is on 21:30 and 23:00, I will also distinguish the schedule after the date changes. Schedules are subject to change.

    Tonight’s focus currency pair

US Dollar/Canadian Dollar: Re-examine the initial reaction at 23:00

For the US Dollar/Canadian Dollar, a lower number means a stronger Canadian Dollar, and a higher number means a stronger US Dollar. If the 21:30 result is perceived as showing the resilience of the Canadian economy, it could be a downward factor. However, since US factors will be added at 23:00, even if the Canadian Dollar is bought, the decline may be offset by US Dollar buying.

If you are trading across the announcement, record the prices before 9:30 PM and before 11:00 PM separately. If the initial decline does not continue after 11:00 PM, it is important not to fix your judgment solely on the reason that “the Canadian figures were good.” Treat this as a currency pair where the evaluations of two countries collide.

USD/JPY: Do not confuse the reaction to Canada with the strength or weakness of the US.

Even if the USD/CAD moves, that alone does not determine the overall strength or weakness of the US dollar. For USD/JPY, look at the reaction of US interest rates after 11:00 PM and whether the yen is also being bought against other currencies. Avoid directly applying price movements caused by Canada-specific factors to your rationale for USD/JPY.

CAD/JPY: Movements caught between two currency pairs.

CAD/JPY is influenced by both the Canadian side and the yen side simultaneously. The theoretical relationship is “USD/JPY ÷ USD/CAD.” Even if the Canadian dollar strengthens against the US dollar, if the USD/JPY falls significantly, the rise in CAD/JPY may not continue. Because actual displayed prices have differences in bid/ask spreads and update times, do not consider this relationship as a formula that can directly generate profit.

Conditions that distinguish between the rise, fall, or sideways movement of USD/JPY.

    Conditions for considering a rise.

If US interest rates continue to rise after the 11:00 PM announcement and USD/JPY also breaks above and maintains the price range from just before the announcement, consider a bullish outlook. However, the initial rise alone is insufficient. If interest rates lose their gains or if yen buying spreads and USD/JPY returns to its original range, withhold your explanation for a rise.

    Conditions for considering a fall.

If cautious views on the economy or the easing of inflation concerns lead to a decline in US interest rates, and USD/JPY is also unable to recover, the conditions for a downward trend are met. Conversely, if USD/JPY stops falling even when interest rates drop, other factors may be supporting it. Do not keep selling just because you saw a weak indicator; check your perspective based on price reactions.

Conditions for considering sideways movement or oscillation.

If the strengths and weaknesses of economic and inflation outlooks are mixed, and interest rates and exchange rates move in different directions, expect a development where it is difficult to establish a clear direction. If the price updates a high or low but immediately returns to the pre-announcement range, you can decide to refrain from trading. Sideways movement does not mean it is safe; there are cases where the closing price remains unchanged while the price oscillates significantly in between.

Decide the room for additional trades before the weekend.

Friday night is a time when you want to avoid the tendency to increase trading volume with the mindset of “making it back on the next indicator.” For example, as a hypothetical assumption for explanation, if you set your total loss budget for tonight at 5,000 yen and lose 2,000 yen in the 9:30 PM trade, the remainder is 3,000 yen. Just because it is 11:00 PM does not mean you should return the budget to 5,000 yen. If you have open trades, consider that potential loss as well.

Holding both a USD/JPY buy and a USD/CAD buy results in trades that both expect a strong US dollar. Even if there are two currency pairs, risk is not necessarily sufficiently diversified. Because there is also spread widening and execution slippage during announcements, do not increase your quantity to the limit just because you have stop-loss orders in place.

When the weekend trading session ends early on the morning of Saturday, October 10th, standard retail FX trading enters a closed period. Please check the closing time and order handling with your broker. Prices at the start of the week may gap due to news during the closed period, and you may not be able to settle at your planned level. Decide whether to carry over positions before tonight’s trading, not after you have unrealized gains or losses.

Tonight, make a judgment at 9:30 PM and update it at 11:00 PM. Whether to carry over to the weekend is a separate decision. Rather than trying to guess the numbers, be prepared to stop when your explanation no longer holds up.
