Apple’s $2,999 iPhone Duo Treats the Canadian Dollar Like It’s Worth 67 U.S. Cents

Three burgundy smartphones: left an open foldable display with desert wallpaper; center and right show back and front views highlighting the triple-camera system and gloss finish.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone starts at $2,999 CAD in Canada, but the exchange rate alone doesn’t explain how the company got there from its $1,999 US starting price.

If you’re just waking up now, that $2,999 entry price point for the iPhone Duo is not a dream (the highest end configuration at over $5,000 after tax is a nightmare though).

Comparing those prices, the 256GB iPhone Duo effectively values the Canadian dollar at about 66.7 U.S. cents. On September 9, when Apple announced the phone, the Bank of Canada’s daily rate put the dollar at roughly 72.5 U.S. cents.

That difference adds up when you’re buying a phone this expensive.

At the announcement-day exchange rate of $1.37 CAD per U.S. dollar, $1,999 US converts to approximately $2,758 CAD. Apple’s Canadian price is about $241 CAD higher before tax, or 8.7% above a straight currency conversion.

Apple hasn’t disclosed the exchange rate behind its pricing. However, dividing $2,999 CAD by $1,999 US gives an implied rate of approximately $1.50 CAD per U.S. dollar.

The iPhone 18 Pro has a smaller Canadian premium

The comparison gets more interesting when you look at the iPhone 18 Pro, which Apple announced at the same event.

The base 256GB model starts at $1,199 US in the United States and $1,749 CAD in Canada. Those prices imply an exchange rate of approximately $1.46 CAD per U.S. dollar, compared with $1.50 CAD for the Duo.

Here’s how both phones compare using the September 9 exchange rate, before sales tax:

    • iPhone Duo: $1,999 US converts to about $2,758 CAD. Apple charges $2,999 CAD, approximately $241 CAD or 8.7% more.
    • iPhone 18 Pro: $1,199 US converts to about $1,654 CAD. Apple charges $1,749 CAD, approximately $95 CAD or 5.7% more.

If Apple applied the iPhone 18 Pro’s exact Canadian-to-U.S. pricing ratio to the Duo, the foldable would cost approximately $2,916 CAD. That’s about $83 CAD below its actual Canadian price.

So while both phones cost more than a straight conversion of their U.S. prices, the Duo carries a larger percentage premium.

The Canadian dollar was almost unchanged from last year

A weaker dollar between Apple’s annual announcements doesn’t explain the difference, either.

When Apple announced the iPhone 17 Pro last September, one U.S. dollar was worth about $1.38 CAD. On September 9 this year, it was worth $1.37 CAD. The Canadian dollar was actually slightly stronger at this year’s announcement.

The 256GB iPhone 17 Pro launched at $1,099 US and $1,599 CAD, implying an exchange rate of about $1.455 CAD per U.S. dollar. This year’s iPhone 18 Pro pricing implies $1.459 CAD per U.S. dollar, almost the same ratio, so Apple barely changed it.

But the Pro’s Canadian price rose by $150 CAD this year, alongside a $100 US increase in the United States, likely due to the recent surge in memory prices. The Duo, meanwhile, arrives with a higher implied conversion rate.

Now, to be fair, Apple also jacked pricing for the iPhone 16 (not sure why it’s still there), iPhone 17e, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, again likely due to the memory crunch. It’s a tough pill to swallow when usually entry phones see a price drop when new models come out. With the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e rumoured for the spring, we’ll have to wait and see if predecessors will drop in price.

What the price gap tells us

Retail prices aren’t necessarily set through a simple currency conversion. These calculations don’t reveal Apple’s internal costs, currency hedging or regional pricing decisions, and the $241 CAD difference should not be mistaken for $241 CAD in additional profit.

They do show what Canadian buyers are being asked to pay. The Duo’s Canadian price sits 8.7% above its converted U.S. price, compared with 5.7% for the iPhone 18 Pro. Yeah, take that for what it’s worth, but it’s definitely another squeeze on your wallet.

For Canadians already looking at a $2,999 CAD phone before tax, that larger premium makes an expensive purchase even harder to swallow.

With all that said, who’s going to ignore their better judgment and order an iPhone Duo when pre-orders open next month?
