Euro and Aussie shorts build as Gold exposure remains elevated

The week in one sentence: Euro shorts deepened, and Yen longs retreated in the week to October 13. In addition, Coffee buying continued, and Gold exposure remained elevated despite another price decline.

    Euro: Bearish conviction deepens

Speculators turned more bearish on the Euro (EUR), taking net shorts to around 137.6K contracts, the highest level since January 2016. In addition, EUR/USD further extended its bearish move, this time approaching 17-month lows near 1.1150. Against that backdrop, it seems the market is confirming the positioning signal. Exposure is around the 0th percentile, the same as the net positioning percentile. Further price confirmation would strengthen the move; a reversal would argue that the flow is fading.

Crude oil longs pick up pace

Non-commercial players moved decisively towards the WTI, increasing their net longs to just over 100.3K contracts, or two-week highs. Prices moved markedly up, hitting four-week highs past the $94 mark per barrel. That said, the market is confirming the positioning signal. Further data showed exposure is near the 10th percentile and net positioning near the 9th.

Price and positioning are still at odds

The Swiss Franc (CHF) was the clearest mismatch: speculative shorts retreated by around 1.7K contracts, yet USD/CHF rose modestly, implying a weaker Swiss Franc even as positioning became less bearish. That split means the flow has not translated into price confirmation. For traders, a fall back below 0.8323 would begin to validate the positioning improvement, while further upside in USD/CHF would suggest that the apparent short-covering signal is fading.

    Where the flow has confirmation

Price and positioning moved in the same direction for the Japanese Yen (JPY), the Canadian Dollar (CAD) and the Euro (EUR). That gives the move a better tactical footing, but it still needs follow-through next week; a quick reversal would turn the apparent confirmation into a false start.

    The crowded trade

XAU is the most crowded exposure at the 85th percentile, while the British Pound (GBP) sits at the other extreme near the 0th. The practical takeaway is asymmetric risk: crowded exposure is vulnerable to a sharp unwind, whereas the least-owned position has more room to rebuild if price turns.

    Positioning Map

Gold remains the most crowded long by exposure at the 85th percentile, meaning its net position is large relative to open interest. JPY has the strongest outright net-positioning reading at the 83rd percentile, while EUR sits near the 0th net percentile and is therefore unusually lightly owned. These measures capture different dimensions: exposure highlights crowding, whereas the net percentile shows how large or small the position is in absolute historical terms. The map therefore flags crowded exposure in Gold and the greatest potential room for rebuilding in EUR, without treating either extreme as a standalone reversal signal.
